I just got back from seeing the new Jim Carrey movie. I met my friend Sarah at the theatre. We both liked the movie, but my friend told me that the best part was the trailer for another, unrelated move. I said I thought it was a bit odd, but rather than saying odd I should have said funny or something... maybe cute? I dunno. The trailer was for a movie called "Garden State" Aparently, based on the TV show "Scrubs". I have heard of that program, but have never seen it. My friend said she just loves it.
The movie was good. It's a story about love, breakup, and second chances. Memory is an intragal part of the plot. Memory can be a curse or a blessing. For a long time I've felt that not being able to forget can be the most horrible curse one could have inflicted. However I also belive that our memories make us who we are. Without our memories, what are we?
If you feel like seeing a movie in the near future this is a safe bet. But, it's not going on my "must see before you die" list. As a "movie person" I really appreciate the visual affects. The use of layers and focus were excellent. The storyline is a wee bit confusing at parts because it's not linear. However I think it fit the overall story well. Our memories are not always linear either. There were a few "ohh!!" moments in it... where you realize what's going on.
It was nice to get out of the house. I seriously need to get out more.

The incredible shrinking farmerjoe
The Atkins books I ordered arrived Saturday and I started reading them right away. 6 days later I'm already seeing results! Shorts that would not fasten a couple months ago now fit, (though they're a bit snug). The Atkins plan has been the easiest weight loss program I've ever been on. Well.. other than football conditioning with Coach C. my freshman year.. I could have eaten a cow and coach would have made us run it off. The great thing about my freshman year of football was that we never ran more than about 100 yards at a time. but over the course of the practice we sprinted over a mile(per practice) by the end of the season (8 weeks). If you're going to run, streatch, then sprint. I hated the coach that we had the following years. He'd tell us to "do two laps" to "warm up". What a joke. unless you're already in shape distance does nothing but make you hurt and go crazy. Want to run a mile? do it this way:
From a stance, dart about 10 yards, touch the ground, dart back, touch the ground, dart out 20 yards, .. you get the idea. continue to at least 100 yards. If you must, do them in sets. do a set to 50 rest/strech then do a set to 100(yrds).
Once you've done this take a brisk walk to aid in "loosening up" If you're not tired yet, you're at least slightly in shape, so repeat until you start becoming fatigued. Then sprint. At this point it helps if you have some one to "nudge you" some one to tell you to go. (I dunno why it's some psychological thing) Sprint 100 yards, don't just run, go as fast as your stubby legs will take you. Then turn around and run back. Don't pause for more than 15 seconds, you can catch your breath so as not to cough up a lung, but don't relax. Repeat until you hurt. Then do it once or twice more.
The hard part now is following my own advice. The weather is getting warmer.. and I have a "new" pair of shorts.
Tomorrow (Saturday) is the annual Fireman's dance. It's one of the largest fundraiser of the year for the Beemer Volunteer Fire Dept. Each land owner in the fire district has been sent a letter in the mail with a packet of tickets. They are then to fill out the stubs, along with their money. The tickets get you into the door and also put you in a drawing for cash. (other donations are also accepted and you can buy a ticket at the door) There will be live music and a bar. In last weeks newspaper there was an announcement of some couple celebrating their 20somthing-th wedding anniversary. Not too odd in itself, however, the announcement said that they were celebrating on March 20th, at the Beemer ballroom, music by RedEye. Friends and Family invited. We saw that and were thinking "what the @$#%^??!?" I'll spell it out for you:
The Beemer Fire Dept. owns the Ballroom. It's rentable to the public for a small cost. It's quite common for people in the area to rent it for a weekend for a birthday or whatever. But why would some one announce in the newspaper that they are having a party at the Ballroom, mention that music is being played (the Fire dept. booked them for the dance) and then say that friends and family are invited? It cost $5 a head to get in the door and no minors are permitted!! Are these people evil or just incredibly stupid. Our biggest concern is that people are going to show up (possibly with children) thinking that it's a free dance.
Looks like I'll be getting a job at Wimmer's. I'm not exactly looking forward to this job. But it pays $8.25 an hour. Looks like I'll be in the production area.. mixing ingredients and blending... and stuff like that. Don't worry, you will all hear the details of the work, (within any discosure agreements of course). I have my routine drug test on Monday.

The antique roadshow should hit my home town, (Beemer, NE) where I'm currently living. I don't know if it has much value but my job hunt is really getting old.
I may get some more freelance work here in Beemer, but I'm not sure. Today some one mentioned setting up computers for "old ladies" (her words not mine :) in fact that's how she referred to herself) So that they can get e-mail and soforth. Considering how overpriced and crappy the dialup service is in Beemer, I wonder if I could cut a deal with the Boadband-over-wireless carrier that just popped up a few months ago. There are so many people in this rural area that could benefit from internet access. It wouldn't have to be "always on" or high speed. But it should be reliable and cheap. Internet access really should be a more public utility. I wonder if I could set up an e-mail only ISP here in Beemer. I could charge $5 a month... run a dialup server out of my parents house... hmm. I don't think I'd make any money from it though.
I did fix the computer for my aunt's guy friend... (again) first it was a failing hard drive... luckily he had 2, so I just transferred everything over and removed the failing drive. But a short time later he had a virus, and that made his system unable to start windows. The guy needs something to protect the computer from himself, and his grandson. The guy knows a little bit, enough to get into trouble. The grandson has been downloading warez and porn. When you boot from a Linux live CD and mount the hard drive as root, you see EVERYTHING (evil laughter). I've been using Damn Small Linux lately. It's pretty slick. The latest release is a lot better, hardware support has much improved. If you're looking for another small Linux release I also strongly recommend SLAX It's based on Slackware, runs KDE by default, best of all, supports my USB2.0 PCI card :)
This weekend I purchased one of Dr Atkins books. I also purchased an Atkins diet cookbook. (co-authored by the good Dr. himself) I'm thinking this may give me an edge.. we'll see.. And don't get me started on the health of the late Dr. Atkins. 1) congestive heart failure is not caused by poor diet. My grandfather has congestive heart failure. 2) He was killed by injuries in a fall. Which has to make you think.. no matter how well you treat your body or how healthy you are, you could still die next week in some accident.
This is turning into a long post but.. I got word that a friend of mine from Lincoln is engaged now.... no surprise there but it seems like so many people that I know are getting married or engaged or pregnant or something. Perhaps finding single women will become easier as I get older because so many of them are becoming unavailable.... I just hope I don't have to wait until my 30s to find some one nice. Yes, it will happen when it happens.. Honestly I'm not terribly worried about that.. However I don't even have a date for the weekend.. let alone much of a social live in general...
