Oh, Go!

I have a new toy. Last weekend I went out and bought an ogo from ATT Wireless (which was recently purchased by Cingular). I tried to order one online, but they wouldn't ship one to my zipcode. I went to the AT&T store and bought one there. It was $130, with a rebate, but they diddn't have the right form there so they gave me the rebate instantly! :) So the device itself only cost me $100. There was a $20 one-time activation fee and the plan i'm on is $18 a month. No contract. I wasn't sure if it would work in the Beemer area, they wouldn't send it too me claiming there was no service available. The coverage map showed that I should be well within the coverage area. I inquied about the return policy and it was fine.. within 30 days and I can get a full refund, but I would loose the $18 for the first month of service, and the $20 connection fee. That's understandable. So, I buy the device, sign up for it etc etc.. and some time later that evening I give it a try. I fell in love with it instantly. Thumb typing is much easier than I had ever imagined. It was a bit akward at first but on the first night I could almost type without looking. Today I was talking to Vernie, and she said my typing has much improved :) Which brings me back the point I was making... I diddn't want to get the thing if it wasn't going to work where I'm living. Having had a few hours to spend in Omaha and test it out I was concerned because I diddn't want to give it up. The battery was charged just enough for me to register when I got it so it was cricitly low when by the time I got home. I plugged it into the wall and would have to wait untill morning to see what kind of signal I got. I woke up about 3:00 the next morning (this was Sunday) to go to work. I logged on and chatted briefly with Manda. She was up late I guess (being two time zones away). I sat at my kitechen table just long enough to tell her good morning and discover that yes, I did get a signal inside the house, it does work!!!! (yay)

Since then my ogo and I have been nearly inseperable. When I got home from work I showed it off. Before I had a chance to really tell any one about it my mom asked "What is that?". I explained that it was a pager and it's called an "ogo" I went on to say it does, e-mail, text, and instant messaging. I don't think she really understood all that but she got the idea I think. My dad asked me how much it cost, I when I mentioned the $18 a month he made a non-verbal respoce that displayed disaproval and then expressed that he thinks its quite expencive. I replied with something along the lines of "it's cheaper than a cell phone." He say'd something about it not doing as much as a phone and I replied with "It does more than a phone." Which is only half true I suppose. Considering that my ogo dosn't do wireless web and lots of cellphones do have some browswer capability. However, to have the kind of unlimited access on a cell phone that I have with my ogo would tripple the monthly cost. Plus, I've been searching and searching for something with a QWERTY keypad. I would have mentioned that to my dad but I knew it would be pointless.

The ogo device is about the size of a T-mobile Sidekick, but has a clam shell form factor. It has it's own phone number for SMS but has no voice capability. I will check e-mail via POP3 and supports the 3 major instant messingers (AIM, MSN, and Yahoo!). With the $18 plan you get access to one instant messinger, you can add another for $3/month more. (if you have all 3 thats $6 more, or $24 a month total). I have no use for the Yahoo! messinger, and I had to choose between msn messinger or AIM. It was a tough call and I'm glad I had time to think it over. I chose AIM. I did so primarily for the bots. Currently AIM has the best bots which will allow me to access things on demand, weather forcasts etc can all be retrieved via a bot on AIM and that will be an adequate replacement for web access. Currently I can check my e-mail on my ogo, but can't send. SMS works both ways just fine. I downloaded Thunderbird and tried to check my e-mail (I honestly diddn't realized that I had pop3 access with that particular account untill this week.) And I can't send it that way either. hmmm the documentation is horrible so I think I've got the SMTP server wrong. I'll have to write to tech support and ask, and stick to the web interface for now.

I went to Omaha primarily to attend the Omaha Association for the Deaf's Thanksgiving Dinner thing. The food was good, and I had a chance to talk to some interesting people. Near the end I was getting bored and pulled out my ogo, the registration had just gone through so I was able to use it for the first time. Some people started askling me about it. I mentioned that I had just bought it tonight and that I like it. They asked about it's features, how much it cost etc. Of course I had been researching everything I can about the device since as I waited for a chance to buy it, so I had all the answers allready :). I couldn't stay as late as I would have liked, because I had to work the next day. I got home about midnight, and woke up at 3:00 in order to be at work by 4:00. Work went by allright, durring my lunch break I got out my ogo and used it a little. After my lunch break I went to the back to the stockroom and things were pretty much done.. so I went home. That sucked. I could have worked another 20 min and just gone home without taking a break.

Later that day I got a call and was told that I diddn't have to come into work on monday, I was mostly asleep and don't recall exactly why. I have to go into work tomorrow though, I also have to work this friday, the day after thanksgiving. I'd normally have to work friday, it's usually a truck day. But this time it's not, I have to work as a cashier. It will be exciting, I plan to blog about the experience.

once I get my out-going e-mail working on my ogo, I will have to start a blog just for that. Blogging from a mobile device is not a new concept. I'm thinking of calling mine a "blogo" Which is a blend of "blog" and "ogo".

Right on, Target.

I'm still working at Target. I'm trying to get some more hours in. hopefully they'll have me work the sales floor. I expressed interest. I guess that's all I can do. I would like to get hired over to something a little more permanant than the temporary position I have right now. However, the other day I got a call for a second interview at the job I want. If I get this full time job, I'll just say goodbye to Target. If I don't get the job I suppose I'll go back to school as planned. There's no reson for me to go back to school at this point if I get a good full time job. The second interview is Friday the 19th. Let's say I do get the job, I will probably move to Norfolk at the begining of December. Even if I don't start the job untill the first of the year. I'll have to just wait and see I guess.

ooh another post.

Last weekend I went to Omaha for a halloween party. I dressed up as the Greatest American Hero. A couple of people recognised who I was dressed up as so that was cool. I made my costume by going to wal-mart buying a red sweatshirt and red pants (I was surprised I found some -- no way was I going to wear tights). I took some material I allready had and formed a makeshift cape with it, and pinned it to the back of my shirt. For the logo on the front, I found an old white t-shirt. Drew the logo on my comptuer, printed it to an iron-on transfer, ironed it on and cut it out. Then I used athletic tape to ahere the logo to the front of my shirt. For a belt I took a piece of thin poster board and cut it into 2.5" strips. A little glue and more tape and that's all it took. I was pleased with the results I got from the cut-out logo and athletic tape. More than anything I was happy that I diddn't do any permant alterations to the shirt I had just bought.

I had a job interview about a week ago today. I hope to hear back within a week or so. I really hope I get the job but who knows. they're hireing two people and they're interviewing 10 or so. Not bad odds, this job would be very good for me. I'd move out of the house.. I've been thinking about where I should put myself geographicly. There are lots of different factors at play... hmmm well, I think I'll just see if I get this job. If I do get this job, I won't go back to school just yet. If I don't get the job, I suppose I'll go to school as planned. Hmm.

I havn't felt terribly productive lately. The days seem to run together... I work at Target, I put in as many hours as they let me, but that's about it. Target is pretty nice, but they don't pay very well. Though I suppose they pay fine for the kind of work I'm doing. I open a box, put stuff away, .,. put more stuff away.. we take a break, and then I put more stuff away. Some times I take stuff out of storage.. that's a lot like putting stuff away but in reverse. I'm not complaining... it's so much better than Wimmer's when I was grinding meat, though the pay is less and I have to be there earlier and it's a longer commute. It's only part time, so that dosn't help the paycheck, I'm thinking of asking about working the floor, maybe the electronics dept. I have no idea if they need another person there but it can't hurt to ask. If I get this new job that I'm hoping for, I'll stay at Target as long as I can, but I'll only be working the minimum number of hours.

I've not really been on Atkins since roughly labor day. *sigh* stupid horse.... anyway.... I weighed myself recently and don't seem to have gained any weight, so that's good, my clothes fit about the same so that's also good. Though ... I wonder if I'm not starting to very very slowly gain weight back. I noticed my gut in the shower the other day and I could have sworn it's looking bigger. Perhaps I'm just paranoid. I'd like to drop another 2 pant sizes. I'm about half way there from wehre I started so I suppose this is my half time show... Thanksgiving is coming up so that concerns me.. delay of game pentalty?
