Another week....

Vernie and I satarted Atkins this week. Some how it's harder this time. This is the first time for her, and she's allready noticing the change. I started a day later because the Captain and his family bought me dinner for helping him move some stuff. Being one to not pass up a free meal. Also, it's been tougher for me because I've been eating the wrong things. No caffiene though, That's been the hardest part of the induction phase. It really comes down to wanting it. You have to want something to get it. Right now I don't want it badly enough... it dosn't make sense.. how bad does my situation have to get before I want it badly enough to change? I've only gained back ~half of the weight I lost. One of the things I told myself was: "Loosing weight will make me [more desireable] to women". and I asked myself, "Which do you want more; that starchy thing or a hot date?"

Vernie and I have found a few recipies online and out of my Atkins book that we enjoy quite a bit, so that's helped us. I'm going to be more diligent in these next couple of weeks.

I think it's safe to say that the snails are 100% gone from the aquarium. I havn't found any since my last post. The other day we noticed that one of the tetras is much fatter than the other. We can tell them apart now.

This Friday I'm going back to Omaha for yet another vist to Boystown. I'll be exchaning my equipment for a different model, still not sure how well things will work with the phone. We'll just wait and see I guess.

I diddn't make any progress on any projects this weekend. Though I did see my parents and installed the OpenOffice beta on thier comptuer. I was also going to install the AOL instant messenger. But I won't install the latest piece of garbage. I had intended to install the last 4.x version, but diddn't have it on a disk. However today I found this site
. It has the old versions of lots of usefull software. I'm going to download the 4.8 versoin of AIM, the download AIM+. They don't need the garbage taht the newer version of Aim thust upon you and I don't yet want to set them up with a 3rd party All-in-one instant messenger. Vernie got me to take a serious look at Trillian, as it's her favorite IM clinet. and While it works, it's not great, and it's not the one to rule them all. I have been using Gaim and while it's nice too, it's just not what I want.
I'm seriously thinking about going back to seperate IM clinets. Aim 4.8 with Aim+, MSN 7.X with MSN+ ((be sure to not install the "sponser" software) and be sure to get the stuffplug for MSN+. It's the only way I've found to make MSN messenger open your hotmail in Firefox.) I won't be installing the Yahoo! IM client again. Not enough people I know use it. I also think I'll install google Talk. It's nothing special but the gui is nice.
I discovered that AOL has a neat feature tied into their instant messenger. If you have a screen name thingy on AIM, you can set it up to automaticly forward messages to your cell phone via SMS. I had an unused screen name "fjaimbot" that I had intended to use for an aim bot now that they're actually accepted by aol. Well, building a bot was too daunting a task for me so I dropped the idea. But If you want to send a text message to my ogo, just add fjaimbot to your buddy list.

Not much worth writing about has happened lately.

Vernie is still working nights. She has tonight off so the plan was that she would sleep for only a few hours (6 or so) and then we'd do some stuff together. (we need to go shopping.. I'd go myself but I'm a little short on money untill the next payday). Besides it's more about spending time with her than getting supplies. She's still sleeping, I hope she's not sick.

The fish tank is doing well. The plants are mostly dead, ... well the two that arent' 100% dead. The one plant that the snails diddn't eat isn't do very well. I wonder if the CU+ ions we put in the tank, to kill the snails, hurt the plant. The stuff we used is a product called "had-a-snail" The active ingredient is copper. It dosn't seem to kill the snails like a poison would but it does greatly help in reducing their numbers.

I was concerned at first that there would be a plethora of dead snail carcases in the midst of the fish tank. This was not the case. I had assumed that the trace ammount of copper introduced was toxic to the snails. Nope, then I thought "well, maybe the copper replaces the calcuim in their shells and they die off that way" While their shells did seem much more fragile, it wasn't enough to kill them. The most significant affect it had on the snails is that it forced them to crawl out of the watter en masse. From there they could be collected and herded to a bucket for.. um disposal. We mailed some snails to a friend, and I don't recall what we did with the others.. The other day I found a couple who had probably hatched after the copper treatment and I just removed them with a tweasers. They were quickly setenced to "DEATH BY SALT-LICK!!!" I found it to be far more sanitary and humane than just throwing them in the trash or crushing their poor little bodies.

I've been having a lot of trouble with the internet as of late, but it seems to have been resolved. They gave us a different modem and so far no unexplained drop outs, but I'm not holding my breath. It really sucks when your only phone is a VIOP phone... I'm very pleased with both services when they work, but when they don't.. it sucks.

We ditched Cable TV completely this weekend. we get 3 or 4 channels now. A CBS Affiliate, A Fox Affilate and PBS. and some bible channel that never seems to be captioned. I don't miss TV as much as I thought I would, and I will definately enjoy the aditional $40 a month that we'll be saving.

I've been in an odd not-so-productive funk lately.. maybe it's the time of year.
